July 2020: Ausley McMullen Shareholder Steven Hogan recently published an article with The Florida Bar Journal. September 2019: Florida member firm Ausley McMullen shareholder Richard Doran has been elected to chair the First District of Appeals Judicial Nominating Commission for 2019-2020. A former Florida Attorney General, Mr. Doran focuses his practice on state government regulation and civil litigation. He frequently represents clients in matters investigated by the Florida Attorney General’s office and multistate investigations by state attorneys general. Mr. Doran was awarded his J.D. by Stetson University College of Law.
March 2019: Florida member firm Ausley McMullen shareholder and former Florida attorney general Richard Doran recently met in the firm’s offices with recently elected Florida attorney general Ashley Moody and fellow former attorneys general to discuss past and future efforts to protect Floridians. Mr. Doran focuses his practice on state attorney general issues, such as consumer protection, antitrust and multistate investigations.
September 2018: Florida member firm Ausley McMullen shareholder Richard Doran was recently elected vice chair of the judicial nominating commission for the Florida First District Court of Appeal. He was reappointed for a three-year term by Governor Rick Scott on July 1st. Mr. Doran previously served two terms as chair of the judicial nominating commission for the Second Judicial Circuit of Florida during the administrations of Governors Bush and Crist.
August 2018: Florida member firm Ausley McMullen shareholder Major Harding has been chosen by the Economic Club of Florida to receive its Stan Tait Award. A longtime member of ECF, Mr. Harding has previously served as its president and chairman. The Stan Tait Award recognizes current or past ECF members who display character, dedication, integrity, and passion for service. Mr. Harding is a former chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court. He now focuses his practice on appellate law at the firm.
May 2018: The Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce has appointed Florida member firm Ausley McMullen shareholder and former Florida Supreme Court Justice Major Harding as chairman of the local government merger study committee. The “blue ribbon” panel will review the current structure of local government and determine whether a merger between city and county governments would facilitate greater economic and community development. The committee is comprised of nine members, hailing from diverse backgrounds and experience.
February 2018: Governor Rick Scott has reappointed Dylan Rivers of Florida member firm Ausley McMullen to the Board of Architecture and Interior Design. Mr. Rivers is also a member of the probable cause panel by appointment of the board chairman. The Board of Architecture and Interior Design is responsible for reviewing applications for licensure, disciplinary cases, and rulemaking for architects and interior designers in Florida. Also at Ausley McMullen, Jonathan Hayes has published an article in The Florida Bar Journal, entitled Constitutional Rulemaking: What Happens When the APA Doesn’t Apply?, Fla. B. J., Jan. 2018, at 34, 34-37, which examines the administrative consequences of Florida’s recent constitutional amendment regarding medical marijuana. Mr. Hayes practices in the area of commercial litigation and has worked on several issues related to medical marijuana licensing.
August 2017: Former U.S. Attorney Pamela Marsh has joined Florida member firm Ausley McMullen. Ms. Marsh was nominated by President Obama in 2010 to serve as U.S. Attorney, and was subsequently confirmed by the U.S. Senate. She served as the leading federal prosecutor for Florida’s 23 panhandle counties, from Alachua to Escambia, overseeing offices in Gainesville, Tallahassee, Panama City and Pensacola. She was the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida. Ms. Marsh joins former Florida Attorney General Richard Doran and former Senior Assistant Attorney General Douglas Kilby as part of the firm’s corporate compliance and government investigations team. She will also focus on significant cases involving white-collar criminal defense, along with partner Jimmy Judkins.
July 2017: Doug Kilby of Florida member firm Ausley McMullen was a featured speaker at the Florida Bar’s annual meeting in Boca Raton, Florida on June 24th, where he participated in a CLE program on “Consumer Class Actions: Hot Topics and Future Trends.” His presentation focused on recent cases involving food labeling, “green” products, consumer financial services, privacy, and data breaches. Also at Ausley McMullen, Jerry Curington delivered a presentation to the City of Tallahassee Ethics Board on June 22nd. Mr. Curington’s lecture explained the board’s jurisdiction and authority to penalize alleged violations of the City’s ethics code.
June 2017: Sarah Butters has joined Florida member firm Ausley McMullen. Ms. Butters has extensive experience in estate, trust and guardianship litigation, wills, trusts and estate planning, and the administration of probates, guardianship and trusts. She is a graduate of Florida State University College of Law. Also, partners Jim Donohue and Kevin Forsthoefel spoke at Florida A & M University last month at a meeting of the Council of Counsels, a group consisting of the chief legal officers of Florida’s twelve public universities, where they addressed bankruptcy issues confronting institutions of higher education when current and former students – and in some cases, their parents – file bankruptcy petitions.
April 2017: Justice Major Harding of Florida member firm Ausley McMullen is the recipient of the 2017 Faith and Profession Award from the Tallahassee Christian College and Training Center. The award was given in recognition of Justice Harding’s strengths as a business professional and a committed Christian who lives out his faith in the workplace and community. Justice Harding’s path to the bench began in 1968 in the Duval County Juvenile Court. He later served as a circuit judge and was elected chief judge in 1974 and 1975. He was appointed to the state’s highest court in 1991 and was subsequently retained by Florida’s voters. He served as Florida’s chief justice from 1998 to 2000. Justice Harding has been a shareholder with the firm since his 2002 retirement from the Florida Supreme Court.
March 2017: James “Jimmy” Judkins, Thomas Schulte, Jr., and Jonathan Hayes have joined Florida member firm Ausley McMullen. Mr. Judkins has been a certified civil trial lawyer for more than 30 years and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He represents clients faced with complex civil, criminal, and family law issues. His trial work includes complex criminal cases in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, involving allegations of health care fraud, bribery, bank fraud, antitrust, commercial crimes, and drug offenses. Mr. Schulte has practiced law for over 20 years, focusing on family law, criminal defense, clemency, personal injury, and general civil trial practice. Finally, Mr. Hayes is the firm’s newest associate. He joins Ausley McMullen following his clerkship with the Honorable Judge Robert Hinkle of the Northern District of Florida.
February 2017: Bob Pierce and Steven Hogan of Florida member firm Ausley McMullen have co-authored the 2017 edition of Bloomberg BNA’s Florida Corporate Income Tax Navigator. The publication summarizes issues of note related to Florida corporate income tax. The Navigator is available through the Bloomberg BNA tax information service.
January 2017: Kevin Forsthoefel and Steven Hogan of Florida member firm Ausley McMullen have been named shareholders in the firm. In addition, Mr. Hogan and fellow shareholder and former Florida Attorney General Richard Doran have authored the first 50-state compilation of current “drone” law, entitled State Drone Law: State Laws and Regulations on Unmanned Aircraft Systems, a copy of which can be downloaded here.
